Ride to Ray’s Tavern in Green River, February 12, 2006
Eighteen hearty souls riding thirteen harleys gathered in the 37 degree clear cold to do the two hundred miles to Ray’s Tavern in Green River, Utah and back. The air was brisk, but every day riding is beautiful, and this day was special despite complaints about freezing hands and other appendages. This has never been my favorite ride, because it is largely just a long cold ride at interstate speeds to have lunch and return. However, this day was made special by the stunning late afternoon sunset and moonrise happening simultaneously, as we descended over the last hill into the Grand Valley coming home. Typically sunsets are uneventful this time of the year, but this particular afternoon a spectacular full moon was sitting just above the book cliffs and the late afternoon sun illuminated the jagged book cliffs with hazy orange, pink, and purple colors. It was a spectacular visual bombardment of the senses and a special time in a special place. It only lasted for a few minutes and then the sun disappeared over the western horizon, the full moon soon was enveloped by clouds, darkness began to fall and it started to be cold again. Those of us who witnessed this beautiful site will have this image burned into our memories forever.
