April 22 2006 Dinosaur Monument Ride

A hearty group of Harley riders headed for Dinosaur National Monument to check out the dinosaur quarry on a glorious Colorado day.  Our ride took us over Douglas Pass to Rangely.  We stopped briefly on the top to gaze upon the beautiful ride we had just taken through the beautiful canyon below which transitions from the desert scenery in Grand Junction to pastoral and forest vistas as we rode over the pass.  It is a pretty spectacular view from the top.  We stopped in Rangely to stock up on provisions and drinks to enhance our sack lunches and quench our big thirst.  We stopped in Jensen, Utah and ate our lunches at the entrance to the monument at the visitor center.  The Green River was flowing at near capacity and is a beautiful sight to behold after riding through stark, rugged country with the remains of numerous critters on the pavement providing a target rich environment for scavengers.

We rode up the hill to the quarry and spent time examining the extensive exhibits of dinosaur bones that have accumulated at the quarry site.   It is a rather impressive collection.

Our return ride to Grand Junction was uneventful with the exception of Leo Grap dropping his glasses on the roadway and returning to retrieve them, only to find that they had been run over and were pretty bent.  It was a long and beautiful ride and we enjoyed being out there.
