Green Cabin Ride
Meeker, Colorado
July 29-30, 2006
A great time was had by all...again. This has to be one of the nicest places we gather to enjoy one-another's company. As usual, Tim and the rest of the 'cookies' made our bellies full with the help of the ladies present. We enjoyed lots of good food, drink, and friendship.
Once we arrived Saturday morning, the first thing on the agenda was breakfast. After being hoisted onto my bike, I led the group on a fantastic trip to Craig, where we fueled, then on to the Twenty-mile cut-off east of Hayden, and over to Jesus' old stomping grounds...Oak Creek. We paused there for just a short while to visit, then took off again to Yampa, Toponas, and up over the Gore range (Gore Pass), to the intersection of Highway 40, and east to Kremmling. At Kremmling, we had lunch, (including a plate of breaded deep-fried dill pickle wedges) ordered by Ryan, which were 'different' to say the very least. Most of us ate Mexican food of some variety, and the food was pretty darn good
.
After our lunch at Kremmling, it was back on the road to Rabbit Ears Pass, up over the top, and down to Steamboat Springs, Milner, through what once was Mt. Harris, past the Twenty-mile cut-off to Hayden, and on to Craig, where we fueled again. After about a thirty-minute break at Craig, we headed out again South to Meeker on Highway 13.
All this time, the Pork was-a-cookin in the ground at Meeker, and when we got there, it was time to wrap our lips around yet another feast of great fixins'. There is always a lot of food available for us folks on a "See-Food" diet. Pork, Chicken, Spiral-cut Ham, Corn-on-the-cob, baked goods, fruits of several kinds, and of course...drinks. What an evening! There was time to play in the river,... even Tim got a couple of rides down the current.
After getting some much-needed rest, (and a lot of ribbing) we got up Sunday to another beautiful day...and another great breakfast of flapjacks cooked by Terry Edwards, then took a ride up the White River to see Ryan's property, and then back to the camp where we loaded up for home. Some said their good-bye's at the Cabin site, and came straight home to GJ. The rest of us, undaunted by our mileage the day before, decided to have Bill Gert lead us to Rangely, where we fueled again, and then over the top of Douglas Pass, and down part way, for yet another impromptu side-of-the-road picnic. We had cold Chicken, Corn-on-the-cob, Pork, Ham, and other good things to eat. I'm telling you, I could get used to this!
Anyway, after this snack, we put everything away again, and headed home, via Loma, and Fruita. I don't know about the rest of the HOG members, but as for me, I have some more good memories, weigh a few more pounds, and have 607 more miles on my bike since Saturday morning...and a big grin on my face as well.
Thanks to all of the HOG members who participated, helped out where needed, brought stuff to eat and drink, made us all laugh, and most of all...made us feel welcome. Personally, I can hardly wait for the Green cabin ride next year. And riding through some of the most beautiful country in the US with friends doesn't hurt any, either. Thanks again, all of you...
