Ride to Cottonwood Cove
September 1-3, 2007
A crisp autumn day set the stage for a ride to Cottonwood Cove Resort and a great weekend in Southwestern Colorado. Twenty two Harley enthusiasts gathered at the Harley Dealership and rode together to Montrose. We fueled up, hydrated, and rode on to Lake City stopping briefly at the Eastern end of Blue Mesa Reservoir for photos. We enjoyed a great lunch at the park in Lake City with a watchful eye on the clouds and felt some drops of rain. After lunch we rode up and over the top of Slumgullion Pass and down to Creede. That is a beautiful area and our hearts were glad as we motored up over the top of the pass and down the other side. It was a big blue sky and small white clouds danced overhead. Cottonwood Cove Resort is just beyond Creede and we checked in there in the early afternoon.
Cottonwood cove is nestled between high rock cliffs, and the Rio Grande River flows just to the South of the cabins. We enjoyed a great weekend there, had great food, good drinks, good stories, met interesting people from Northern Alberta, Canada, who were having a family reunion there. They had fish stories galore and showed us some photos of fish as big as people. We connected well with them and shared a shelter for cooking and eating.
Sunday morning some of the group took a big ride to Chama, New Mexico and a few decided to just chill out and take a short ride to Pagosa Springs, soak in the hot pools, cool off in the current of the Rio Grande River, eat lunch and ride back. Everyone had a great time. Tim and Sue Himes headed back early on Sunday morning because while they were gone they received the good news that they were the proud grandparents of a new baby boy, Benjamin Douglas. Congratulations to Tim and Sue and also Brad and Jenny the proud parents.
Monday morning we started our ride back. We came back via Wolf Creek Pass, Pagosa Springs, Durango, and Red Mountain Pass. We encountered some rain but for the most part the weather was perfect for riding past some of the most beautiful scenery in Colorado. It was a good weekend and a great Ride.
